How to install Computer Management

F

Frank Natoli

My WinXPe Control Panel, Administrative Tools, only contains an icon
for Component Services (which curiously contains Event Viewer, even
though Event Viewer is ordinarily found in Administrative Tools at the
same level as Component Services). There is no icon for Computer
Management. If I setup a filter for a display name of "Computer
Management", TD returns 0 matches. If I setup a filter for file
"compmgmt.msc", TD indeed finds the file, and the component. But the
component is already in the target image. Yet it does not appear in
Administrative Tools.

Ditto for items such as CMD.EXE (DOS prompt) and CALC.EXE (calculator),
which are both already in the target image, but not "visible" from any
selection tree.

What component is responsible for placing such items in the START, All
Programs, etc., display?

Thanks.

Hello Sean,

I have a similar problem. I do not wish to add any short cuts to the start
menu so that users of our system can't easily access core components. I added
"Add/Remove hardware component" so that I can get some pug and play when
adding thumb drives and mice/keyboards. I added the Control Panel component
and networking so I can change TCP/IP settings. After the build is complete
and running on the target I do not have access to the add hardware icon in
the control pannel. Also the Administrator icon in the control panel is
missing. So at this point when I add a usb thumb drive it apears in my
computer but when you attempt to access it the OS states it's not formatted.
I found a reply on a message board stating that after setting the show
control panel on start menu under the user interface core component I was now
able to access the thumb drive and see the add hardware icon in the control
panel. The problem is I don't want to add this icon to the start menu. How
can I get thumb drives to appear with out having to add the control panel to
the start menu? Why do I need to add things to teh start menu in order for
more icons to appear. I am using a minlogon right now.

Thanks
Steve

I use registry settings to disable the contents of the start menu after
I've finished setting up the box - it should be fairly simple for you to
do likewise.

I could do that but are you disabling the start button or removing icons
from the start menu? We use the start menu to access some custom
applications. I wish I had a better understanding of why icons on the start
menu effect other components that are installed in the XPe build. I guess
this isn't really a short cut and some thing with in the OS must be starting
some service.

Thanks
Steve

I remove everything from the start menu. One of the things that annoys
me is that removing shut down from the start menu also removes it from
the ctrl-alt-del menu.
Try looking at the contents of the components you've had to add - you
may find that they have more to them than just a shortcut and you can
then try disabling the start menu shortcuts within them in target
designer. THis may let you kill the shortcuts but keep the rest of the
functionality.
