Hi,

I'm trying to identify a disk (\Device\Harddisk1\D) on which I've some
errors on the event logger.

On my PC I've an old IDE Maxtor 80GB (on which I know I've few
problems) & a SATA Maxtor 200GB.

I found doc 159865 but it's only for 2000/NT, I've XP Home SP2.

If I use diskmgmt.msc method (for 2000) the "guilty" one seems the
200GB disk, if I use the regedit method (for NT), the guilty one
seems to be the 80GB (but I'm not so sure I understood the way it's
working ..).

Anybody knows if a similar doc exist for XP ?
Any docs/pointers really appreciate, I'm quite stuck ..

Thanks in advance & Ciao,
Luciano

What you mean with you have some errors/issues with?, does it not showing in
the My Computer or what the Event Log tell you?.
In the event viewer by opening the run command and type in:
eventvwr click [OK], there click on each :
Application
System
Security
Look in the right Pane/Window for error messages(X) Double click it to get
more info about the error and you can copy and paste in your next post:
HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us

Run the Check Disk on both of them to correct any bad block or bad
sectors/clusters on them.

Hi,

Errors are for example bad blocks, but aren't the issue here. I'm
aware of them on a IDE disk & I already run the Maxtor utility to
repair them.

What I'm looking for is a clear (if possible ..) doc/pointer on how
identify a disk from the event message in XP, in my case for example:
\Device\Harddisk1\D

As I wrote I found only 1 doc (159865) for 2000/NT and not so
clear ... possibly because I'm trying to apply it to an XP system ..

Thanks & Ciaooooooo,
Luciano

Harddisk1 is the slave or second drive. The master drive is Harddisk0.

In Windows Explorer Harddisk1 is labelled D

Try running HD Tune(freeware).

Download and run it and see what it turns up.
http://www.hdtune.com/

Select the Info tabs and place the cursor on the drive under Drive
letter and then double click the two page icon ( copy to Clipboard )
and copy into a further message.

Select the Health tab and then double click the two page icon ( copy
to Clipboard ) and copy into a further message. Also do a full surface
scan with HD Tune.

Hope this helps.

Hi Gerry,

Try running HD Tune(freeware).

Thanks for this, nice little tool ..:-)) I'm currently using speedfan
to have smart infos, but doesn't have the benchmark & scan functions.

No, D is a DVD, here a summary from HDtune on my 2 disks:

Once again I'm not really concerned by the errors themself, I'm just
trying to find a way (possibly not empirical ..) to associate the disk
name I've on the event logger (es. \Device\Harddisk1\D) to a physical
disk.

Thanks & Ciaoooooooo,

Open my computer right click the HDD, select properties.
On the HDD properties click on Hardware Tab then click Properties, there
click On Policies what are the settings there?.
You can use Resource Kit Tools:

In Disk Management you should see Harddisk0 and Harddisk1. Clearly
Harddisk0 is the 80 gb Maxtor and Harddisk 1 is the 200 gb Maxtor. Are
drive / partition letters shown in Disk Management?

Is this computer single or dual booting? If the latter this can cause
problems with drive lettering.

On which drive is the Windows operating system?

Are you using any drive imaging tools?

Can you please post a complete copy of the Report from Event Viewer.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Hi All,

Probably found it, downloaded this:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/SystemInformation/WinObj.mspx

Under the Device is giving me the volume associated to harddisk0
(volume 1 & 2) and harddisk1 (volume 3 & 4).
Under GLOBAL I've C: = \Device\HarddiskVolume2 & F: = \Device
\HarddiskVolume4

So, this confirm what disk mngt shows me, the 80GB is harddisk0 & the
200GB harddisk1

I know that I was making complicated something probably really
simple, but I wanted to be sure of the relation between physical disks
& disks in the event logger.

Now I've to understand why I got event 7 (bad blocks) & event 51
(paging problem) on the 200GB disk on which the SMART infos/ & the
scanning disk tools (seatools) shows no bad/reallocated block & I
don't have a pagefile on it ... I was expecting these events on the
80GB disk ...

But this is another story...

Thanks all of you for the hints & tips !!!
Ciaooooooooooo,
Luciano
