how to I change from 32 bit to 64 bit processor

Hi All

Although this is not a Vista newsgroup, I thought I'd ask this question
anyway.

Vista will be for both 32 bit and 64 bit processors.
how to I change from 32 bit to 64 bit processor.
Must I change the CPU or is another tweak available?

If a CPU change is the only way, what sort of extra dollars are we talking
about for the extra 32 bits?
And is it worth it?

Cheers.

Vista is available in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions.

By replacing the computer's 32-bit motherboard and CPU with a 64-bit
motherboard and CPU.

Must I change the CPU ....

Not just the CPU, but at least the motherboard, as well.

....or is another tweak available?

No.

The varies from manufacturer to manufacturer, and vendor to vendor.
I'd expect it to come to somewhere around $500 for decent quality
components.

That price is way high. Of course, I cant be sure what hardware you are
adding up, certainly not just a MB & CPU, and what constitutes 'decent
quality' is also subjective.

64 bit mobo and CPU, maybe a new case and power supply, new
operating system. Probably new hard drive, hey just buy a
new computer;.

This is true. I'm at a point where an upgrade is necessary, but I need
all new stuff really.

I just can't seem to force myself to buy a pre-assembled PC from whomever
though.

The real deal killer though is buying the OS when builing.

Then again, if you can reuse, something like this is a good deal...entry
level AMD64 dual core & Asus MB for $181....

No, there just are two separate Vista versions - one for 32 bit
another for 64 bit. If your CPU supports 64-bit mode, you can
install either version. Otherwise - only 32-bit version.

You don't do this just out of curiosity. Going for 64-bit can be disruptive because
some software or hardware you depend on, may be not 64-bit ready yet.
Your time and frusration can be priceless.
However.... 64-bit PCs are already becoming commodity.
And is it worth it?

Depends on what you need it for.

Probably cheaper to purchase a new 64 bit PC with an OEM version of
Vista preinstalled.

To upgrade your present box you would need a new 64 bit motherboard
and 64 bit CPU plus cooling fan. You may also need a new power
supply and/or RAM.

So a new computer is probably going to be just as cheap and far less
likely to be problematic.

You should also be aware that many hardware devices do not yet have 64
bit drivers available, and that you may have serious issues if you
need to run older software, especially any 16 bit (Windows 3.x)
software, on your 64 bit Windows Vista.

Good luck
