My computer has no floppy drive anymore.
But the WinExplorer shows still the drive A:\

How can I hide this drive permanently?

How could I unhide it later (if necessary)?

Perhaps by deleting this value:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices\DosDevices\A:

If you plan to do this then you should prepare yourself like so:
1. Export the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices to
c:\Sebastian.reg.
2. Edit this file and remove all values other than DosDevices\A:.

If you need to restore this value, run regedit /s c:\Sebastian.reg. Most
likely you won't have to - Windows repopulates this list automatically.

While there are other ways to do this, an easy way is to download the free
MS tool, Tweak UI, which is available from:
http://downloads.pcworld.com/pub/new/utilities/system_resources_tune_up/tweakui133.exe

Right-click the TweakUI .inf file and select install. Should a notice
appear saying a disk is required, click OK and another screen appears. Click
browse, go to the folder containing Tweak and click OK and OK.

Once installed, click on My Computer in the left frame and then click on
Drive. Remove the check mark on A drive.

The reason I recommended this program is there are a host of customizations
that can be made with it and which you might enjoy.

Did we mistake the question mark in the subject line for a 7? ;-)

The other problem with Bear's post is that he puts his signature in the
WRONG place. Whether top- or bottom-posting, signatures ALWAYS go at
the bottom. I've seen him cross-posting someone else's message to
another group but he cannot ensure that others will actually see the
body of the original body because some readers strip off signatures
(which are very likely to be fluff or off-topic). He puts his signature
before the original message so it becomes part of his signature.

Enter your BIOS, chosse the Floppy drive and choose None. You can re-enable
it by choosing another choice.

Disable it in the BIOS.

A follow-on question. I disabled my A: drive in the BIOS some years ago,
but something during a system restart was still accessing the drive
(probably the BIOS POST). So I think I disconnected the power cable as
well. Now I'm saving a little electricity.

I've often wondered what that A: disk access is. Does anyone know?

Using TweakUI , the "My Computer" item expands and its first subitem is
"Drives". Simply uncheck Drive A there, and then Drive A does not appear in
"My Computer".
