How to Hide Inactive Icons

My Inactive Icons wont hide. The box is ticked in the taskbar menu and it
still wont hide.
Can someone please help me. i just got this computer a couple of days ago,
and its already causing me problems because of windows XP.
i am using Service Pack 1 Home Edition
