How To get STAND BY to work????

Why doesn't my PC stay in "standby" mode? Within about 15 seconds it wakes
itself up - at least 90% of the time. I close everything before putting it
in Standby, but that doesn't seem to help. All programs have been disabled,
one at a time, and none have been found to cause the problem.

This PC, a new HP, came with W-XP Home Addition (no SP2 installed.)
Someone (on another NG) suggested I go into the BIOS and make a change there
but no one here is qualified to do that, nor would we know what to change,
how, or where.

Anyone....?

TIA :-)

You may have 'wake on LAN' or a similar setting in BIOS, which is why you were
referred there.

Thanks, the site was very helpful and I guess we'll learn to live without
that function since neither of us know anything about the BIOS and no
drivers were updated etc. It just stopped working slowly, until it seldom
stays in Standby at all.

This is from the website:
"First thing: Using both BIOS-based power management and Windows-based power
management rarely works. If you are using both, disable one or the other."

How would we know which or both of these are working at the same time?
We've made no changes. The site didn't explain how or where to look!!

Hi,

That is one of the BIOS options. See my response to you in the newusers
group for details on accessing the BIOS and what to look for. It may be best
to stick to one group or the other, or you are going to get repeated
information and possibly conflicting advice.
