How to get search to only return files that exist?

How can I get the search tool to only return files that exist? I was
trying to clean out some files that had gotten into a directly tree
they were not supposed to be. I searched for them and deleted them -
but they still show up in the search results. I close the search
results and try the search again - the files show up still. But if I
try to open the file I am told they file does not exist. What I need
to do is verify that I have removed all the offending files. How can I
get the search to work right?

Have you tried rebuilding the index?

how about TELLING him to do it (rebuild the index), instead of your short,
sharp, ignorant reply

Hi theclyde,

Go to this link and scroll down towards the bottom and do the rebuild
for Indexing. It sounds like your indexing database has the old ones in
it still.

Hope this helps,

I will try rebuilding the indexes tonight when I get home. How long
does rebuilding the indexes take? Do I need to rebuild them any time I
delete a file?

I don't really know the answer to that. Rebuilding the index only takes a
few minutes and would be a good place to start. If rebuilding the index does
resolve the issue, you might try excluding the location of the frequently
deleted files from indexing.

Well Mick, I didn't know if the OP had already done this and I"m not really
sure if rebuilding the index will resolve the issue, so asking if this had
been done seemed to be a reasonable response.

Thanks Jim. Excluding the locations from the index sort of defeats
the purpose of the index. But if reindexing only takes a few minutes I
will see about incorporating that into my routine till I find a
replacement for Explorer and Search.
