How to get S.M.A.R.T.-enabled devices report to basic users?

Hi,

I'm running SpeedFan which reports some system data such as CPU and
case temperature and S.M.A.R.T.-data from harddisks (temperature
values, primarily).

Unfortunately, this doesn't work when running SpeedFan as a normal
(unprivileged) user. When starting SpeedFan with administrative
privileges, everythings goes fine.

Is this a restriction from Windows' side? Maybe insufficient rights in
accessing the device driver? Anything I could do by modifying the
local security policy?

Thanks,

R.B.

See "Runas"

Yeah, but I don't want users to bypass their restricted environment by
casually entering Administrator privileges ...

And, at the same time, I don't want to enter my admin tokens everytime
I want to start that program - ain't there a "smooth" solution?

Raphael,

It is not clear what type of SMART security you are using, however maybe the
following is useful

1.. If you are individually enabling, configuring, and disabling
authentication methods and encryption requirements, on the Security tab,
click Advanced (custom settings), click Settings, and then do the following:
a.. Under Logon security, click Use Extensible Authentication Protocol
(EAP), click Smart card or other certificate (encryption enabled), click
Properties, and then do the following:
1.. If you want to use the certificate that resides on your smart
card, click Use my smart card.
2.. If you want to use the certificate that resides in the certificate
store on your computer, click Use a certificate on this computer.
3.. If you want verify that the server certificate presented to your
computer has not expired, has the correct signature, and has a trusted root
certification authority, select the Validate server certificate check box.
4.. If you only want to connect to servers within a particular domain,
select the Connect only if server name ends with check box, and then type
the name of the domain.
5.. To specify that the root certification authority for your server
certificate must be in a particular root certification authority, in Trusted
root certification authority, click the appropriate certification authority.
6.. To use a different user name when the user name in the smart card
or certificate is not the same as the user name in the domain that you are
logging on to, select the Use a different user name for the connection check
box.
Good luck

John
