How to get rid of hidden directories?

Can someone tell me if it's possible to configure
Frontpage so that it does *not* create the
hidden "_vti_cnf" directories all over the place? I
surmise these are being used to figure out if the files
are synchronized between the local and remote web site,
but they're causing me great grief with my php web sites.
I'd rather fall back on knowing myself which files to
upload if I have to. Anything that lets me turn this
feature off.

I am not using anything like Themes, btw or shared
borders.

If you get rid of the FrontPage Server extensions on the server, and if
you're using FrontPage 2003, you can do without them.

Thanks Kevin for your quick reply.

Just to be sure let me ask again to make sure I
understand you correctly. Although I said I wasn't using
themes, there is one site that uses a Theme, but I have 4
other sites that don't. One server is Windows 2003, the
others are Linux (with Chillsoft). I *do* use Frontpage
2003. So can I remove the Frontpage server extensions on
all the sites?

Thanks in advance for your reply.

If you have anything that uses them, including publishing- no. If it is
published by HTTP- no

You can not avoid them if you open any site in FP (any version)
(w/ or w/ the FP SE, themes ,etc)
FP generates them as _hidden system files/folders while you are working on the site to track all files, navigation, design time
tools , etc.) and to manage your open site.

And you can't prevent FP from publishing them (even when publishing to a FTP site)
If you publish to a site running the FP SE, FP does not upload the local ones, it generates new ones in the publish location (and
uses them to "compare", to the local site, for changes)

If you really don't want to upload them to your non FP SE sites, publish your local to another Disc Based Web location, and then in
Windows Explorer in that new "web folder" Find and Delete all _vt*, then use a 3rd party FTP client to upload them

Themes require FrontPage server extensions.

??

Kevin, now we all know you don't use themes (-;
- they are design time tools, not run time tools
