I want to get rid of the Windows AutoUpdate Icon on the SysTray on
Windows 2000. Can anyone tell me which application or process to
stop, using MS Config, to get rid of this nuisance.

(I just had to rebuild my operating system, and after all the problems
I previousy had with SP4, I'm staying at SP3 this time.)

Thanks in advance for all replies.

Go to the Control Panel. Launch the auto updates applet and uncheck the box
near the top. From here forward, it will be up to you to visit Windows
Update to keep your machine up to date.

There are two services which may be running for this that you mention to appear. Start | Settings | Control Panel | Administrative Tools | Services.

They are:

1) Autoatic Updates
2) Background Intelligence Transfer Services

If you disable both, it will not appear in your System Tray. Double-click eaxh | Startup type | Disabled.

Thank you for the info, but since I like to work through MSConfig,
could you tell me exactly which services I'd be looking for there?
(They often have cryptic names in MS Config.)

Thanks.

Well since I do not support that application you're on your own. That application when you use it to remove various startup applications leaves your system in a not normal state. Actually if you look on the Services tab you will see there exactly what I told you. But I didn't tell you that.
