how to extend max columns >56

have table with 51 columns and need to add 20 more. How to exceed max of 56.

The max is 255, not 56. There is also a limit of 2 KB per row. You might have
hit that limit as the error message is the same.

A proper table would seldom need more than 20-30 fields so there's a very good
chance you have a multi-table relationship that you are cramming into a single
table.
