How to extend Desktop beyond size of screen?

I remember in one version of Windows I could and did extend the
Destop beyond the size of the screen.
It was annoying as you had to scrol on the desktop.
But with my 1024x600 Netbook it migh come in handy.
It has XP Home onit - any ideas?

That sounds like a feature that would be available in graphics software e.g.
Nvidia "Desktop Manager," something with which I don't like to tinker !
