How to establish current ONKEY status?

Is there a way of querying the current ONKEY procedure associated with a
particular key? On activating a workbook I'd like to set a menu hotkey, and
on deactivating the workbook I'd like to restore the previous setting. The
help for ONKEY only covers setting, not querying, so the best I have been
able to do is restore the key to its Excel default state which is not
necessarily the same as the key state at the time the workbook was
activated.

I don't know of a way to query onkey. I think it's write-only.
