how to enable communications with solaris server

Hello,
I'm trying to communicate with a solaris server via the serial management port and via my laptop's serial port. I've used terminal emulators like hyperlink and ZOC6. I am able to connect BUT all I get is a window that won't enable me to enter any character. I don't see any menu selection that would enable me to enter commands to see the server. I maybe missing something obvious. I'm new to hardwares so I need you expert advice.
