I've downloaded and tried a few linux versions (Mandriva, Xandros, PCLinux OS). Liked PCLinux. And now for the embarassing bit - I cant figure out how to do a permanent install using the live CD?

The only thing I could find on PCLinux website was something along the lines of 'if you want to do a permanent install on your hard drive then all you need is a few clicks of the mouse'...help!

hope this helps

You could try my easy guide to install Linux - its pretty similar for other Distros -

SAM is the latest PClinuxOS - http://www.sam-linux.org/

The main thing is setting your partitions up - which is made easier on the installation ...

Latest is Sabayon Linux - Its probably the latest and most upto date at moment

Thanks for the guide. I tried a few more times and then it (install) worked - dont know caused the initial problems but who cares ;-)

PC Linux really rocks! It recognized all my hardware, setup my ADSL for me (it took me nearly a week to setup my Thomson ADSL modem in Xandros).

Keep up with latest on Linux

Hi and thanks for letting me know that the guide is helpful,

I have created some more webpages since then and here are some more links if you want to try some software out in Linux ....... most Distros allow you to install software the way I describe using apt-get in a console / terminal window.

Try

http://keithaerospace92.googlepages.com/linux

And to keep up with my latest finds I have mylink here to Stumbleupon which I update on a regular basis ........ and loads of Linux links here........

http://keithinfrance.stumbleupon.com/

I like design programs etc... so it tends to be a bit biased towards that type of software ....
but if you need anything in particular , leave a comment about what you want , I may already know which are the better products on Linux
(sometimes its a case of try it out and see what it does - but it might save you a bit of time installing old stuff and finding its not quite what you wanted , just mention what type of software you like using - ( sourceforge is a good place to look also - if you want to find programs Google Search ( sourceforge CAD ) or whatever most files are compressed but its easy to install them once you have done it a couple of times )).

Keep in touch - its nice to know another Linux user is up and running ........

Hope you like it .......

Its the right thing if it works ok ...............................

Looking at your machine spec you are running its an uptodate machine Kanotix may be ok now that they are working on it again ......

The installation has changed a lot on the latest release of this Distro ....... I did not like the installation choices on it.....

but ...........

Let me know if it works ok ....... if not try another version of Linux ...... theres plenty to choose from.

As I say this suits me and my machine ....... my PC is old like me though ....... yours looks like a pretty high spec Pc

So Sabayon / Mandriva / PcLinuxOS may be better choices ....... its what suits you and your machine that matters.

The three I have quoted above have pretty good installation procedures ...... easy ....... once the partitions are set up it is easier to change to some of the other Distrobutions .......

Let me know if you are successful ....... if not look for the Distro that best suits your spec.

Ubuntu works well on my mates Quad 6600 but Kanotix did not ......... (check what runs best with your graphics card)

Best of luck ..... keep in touch ...... I will try to help if you get stuck ........

This is the link to the untouched version that I used ..... and it is sound ...... other things can be added to it to bring it up todate if you want to use this ....... its easier ......

KANOTIX-2006-01-RC4 (This is the best version in my mind - but all links are now pointing to the new version - sorry)

Thanks for the input 23dornot23d . Me pc I'm afraid is considered to be old tech these days but runs pretty darn nicely if its just doing one thing at a time .

I have just downloaded via a torrent client the latest Mandriva 64 bit distro that I am going to play with over the next few weeks and I think that I will start a thread detailing my experiences .

I gave up on the Gutsy Gibbon Ubuntu due to having othere stuff to do and a few problems with it . I may go back to it after the new release is out as I quite liked it .

Have the Kanotix downloaded and burnt to disc and will be trying this out in the next few days . Will start a thread about my experiences on this too .
