How to Disable DMA setting on external DVD writer

I’ve read the answers about how to disable DMA setting on XP through
Device Manager/IDE Controller. But I’m using an external SONY DVD
writer, which is connected to computer through a firewire (IEEE-1394)
but not IDE cable. Since I, also, have to upgrade my firmware to make
my DVD writer works properly, can someone tell me how I can upgrade my
firmware in this situation?
