how to disable auto PIO mode after DMA errors feature

for some reason i keep getting errors with my dvd drive
anyway i reboot and im fine but the windows XP function
that reverts the devise to PIO mode after a certain
number of errors is annoying me.. i have reinstalled my
ide controller alot... how do i disable this auto PIO
feature
