First of all, note that the Messenger Service is not the same as the
Windows Messenger service (i.e., Microsoft Messenger). They are unrelated.

Second, you can't delete it, but you can disable it:

Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services. Find Messenger and
double-click on it. Click Stop. Then, change the startup method to Disabled.

Thanks for your post it proved to be helpful. I have been trying for a long time
to get rid of Messenger. My question is how do I get rid if the Messenger ICON
(with the red X showing disabled) from my Systray?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

First close down Windows Messenger, Outlook Express and if you are connected
to your Hotmail mailbox, disconnect too (for example by closing Internet
Explorer).

Then go to Start - Run and copy-paste the code mentioned below. Be careful
and copy the exact code as it will change your registry!

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

Confirm and Messenger will be removed.
