How to delete update residue

Windows leaves a lot of residue on our disks after many updates. After SP2, it looks like I have a ton of old junk on my machine that doesn't apply any more. I never intend to go back to pre-updated versions, and I would like to get rid of all that space-wasting, confusing crap. Is there a way to do it safely?
