How to degrade JPEG images

I have a large quantity of excellent JPEG photographs. They're about half a
megabyte each. I'd like to reduce them to about 100kB each, while
preserving as much of the quality as possible. How does one do this using
freeware?

GIMP will do that.

Use the Save As option, enter a new name so as not to over-write the
original and select the quality you want. i.e. 50% which will halve
the file size.

Batch convert with IrfanView http://www.irfanview.com A compression of ~80
should give you excellent results.

As others have said, try Irfanview and save as 'progressive' JPG using
about 80% or so.

I use JPEG Optimizer from http://www.fullyregistered.com/

I use it to reduce jpeg file size for my websites and find it fast and easy.
I especially like being able to view before and afters of the jpeg side by
side. A slide bar allows you to adjust the amount of compression and view
the effects and the optimized file size as you adjust so you can decide how
much compression to use. You can batch save a bunch of files even if you
have selected differing amounts of compression for them.
