How to decline MS updates gracefully

I have my AutoUpdate feature set to 'on' so that I receive all the latest
security fixes to plug the interminable holes in Windows. I keep getting a
reminder that I have updates waiting to be downloaded and when I check them
out it is only IE7 which is available. I have ticked the 'no thank you' box
a zillion times but it keeps coming back to haunt me. How do I tell MS that
I really don't want their buggy browser. I have downloaded it once and it
scrambled my registry and I am still recovering my machine from that little
bit of excitement.

How do you say a polite but firm 'Thanks, but no thanks' to this dreadful
company in a way which will make it stick. Is there a box somewhere to tick
which I haven't found yet. I don't want to dispense with AutoUpdate unless
there is no other way.
