how to deal with a Null value

I have an application that runs at night. I have been getting errors because
one of the fields is not always populated. I don't want this to stop the app
from running. At first the field was declared as an integer. I changed it
to string thinking that would not bomb it out if the field was null. String
errors out with a null field as well. This app only exports a table as a
text file and then deletes the table that was created. If I use the data
type of variant will that keep my app from bombing?
