How to create auto-numbering on images/figures in word?

Anyone knows how to use auto-numbering on images in word? I am composing a
long manual and it has many images, charts, photos. In the document, I always
refer to the images (i.e. for detail, refer to fig. 15). Problem is if I
insert an image at the front, without automatic numbering, I need to search
all the reference in the document, and redo them one by one. Any suggestion?
 
Have you tried using Insert | Reference | Caption and Insert | Reference |
