How to copy selection?

Could someone remind me of the best way to copy a selection from one
image to another please? In this example, I selected an area in the
right image and copied it to clipboard. I cannot simply then paste it
into the left image as that opens a new image. So I first make a
rectangle, guessing the size, and then paste. But the results are very
poor.

----------------------
You need to keep an eye on the pixel size in the upper left corner. Use the
same pixel values for your rectangular to paste into the second image. If
your pixels are less than the original (like in your sample), the results
will be poor.

In detail:
First image > select your area (draw rectangle) > remember pixel size > Edit
Second image > draw your rectangle with same pixel size > Edit > Paste.

Good luck

When you make the first selection the top bar shows the size of the
selection. After copying go to other image and make a selection the
same size (see size varying in top bar), then paste.

Thanks both. Hadn't thought of looking there for data!

That certainly works, but I must say I find it very awkward adjusting
the new rectangle to precisely the same size.

There is "Create custom selection" under the Edit menu, where you can input
your x and y coordinates.

Thanks, Maria, that's better!

Mind you, still leaves the task looking pretty cumbersome for such a
trivial operation as copy/pasting from one image to another. Compare
the simplicity of say PaintShop Pro:
1. Drag around selection in image A.
2. <Ctrl+e> (or Edit>Paste>As New Selection) in Image B
3. Drag to required position.

I've emailed Irfan and asked him if he would consider adding a simpler
facility in a future release.

Well done! I hope he adds it, me too.

If your software allows it.... Cut away all the picture you do not want to
copy but do not save the picture. Then you can copy and paste the part left
over into a document. Do not save the changes you made to the original
picture.

Use Gimp! You can copy the entire photo, or a circle or hand-traced cut out ....

Try Irfanview

Use Gimp! It does this well! For example you can use the circle to extract a face
from one photo
select Edit/Copy Open the other photo Edit/Paste.... then drag it to wherever you
want it on the photo...

You have to have both photos open... you just get it...copy it.... drag it to the
other one , paste .. then anchor
it... it you're through with your first photo... close it... you can choose to save
it with the edit you just did
or leave it as it was ... simply choose don't save.... Now with the photo you're
'messing' with.... you can
go open another photo... select something from it... edit/copy... then open your
'messing' with photo
edit/paste... then drag it wherever you want it .. anchor it... then... you can do
all types of twisting,
swirling, flipping, etc. But before you leave.. you must save it.. give it a
name...save it as a JPEG
to a file you know where it is... then voila. Then you can further modify, alter,
etc. it with IrfanView.

I think you can do it with the latest IrfanView.

You can certainly do it with ArcSoft Photo Studio and it's free -
www.arcsoft.com.
This is an excellent prog and you can paint also - much more sophisticated
than IrfanView.

Good luck
