How to convert files from my documents to a file that movies maker uses?

I was able to rip a DVD on my computer and save it in my documents butit
won't let me download it into Windows Movie Maker for XP. It shows a popup
thing that says the files aren't able to be placed in the movie maker. On
mine I can only download files that end in .WMV and I need to know how to
convert the DVD files into .WMV
