How to configure Win2K Pro workstation to startup and shutdown FAST !

Hi,

Is there a "guide" from Microsoft on HOW TO tune, optimize and hack the
registry to make Win2K Pro workstation to startup and shutdown FAST ! ...
real FAST.

My ears are burning after hearing many complaints from users about the slow
startup and shutdown of their workstation. What we normally do is format the
HDD and do a clean installation if the startup and shutdown process is
really really slow. This is ridiculous.

The workstation spec is P4 3.0 GHz w/HT, 512MB DDR RAM, 40GB HDD. I think
the hardware specs are excellent.

Thanks !!

Well ya have to figure that you can only make a 100mph car
go 100mph. If it was faster then it wouldn't be a 100mph car
right?

So with Windows, you can only make it as speedy as it is capable
of. I would say that its fastest speed is attained before you
start loading software. then as registry entries are added and
the (rolls eyes) swap file increases in size, and directory entries
and their depth on the disk increases, it only takes longer.

That couch would be enjoyable if we put seat covers on it when
it was new. But if we had put seat covers on it we wouldn't have enjoyed it
as a couch. In other words, you can keep it fast by
not loading software but without software it's just no fun.

I do remember seeing articles on how to drastically increase
start/shutdown times, but I think those only serve to prohibit
some system checks on key items that shouldn't be bypassed without
compromising stability. Those are not performance upgrades, those
are like removing exhaust pipes from your car cause it WILL go
faster but yer gonna burn yer valves.

I would suggest at least 1Gb ram though, at 512 it just doesn't
make the difference that a Gig does. Also, its not only the parts
you have, but how they talk to each other. Optimizing the bus
speeds between your devices is more efficient than getting a
high reported clock speed. Also, get faster hard drives (with faster
cabling) cause thats gonna be the bigger bottleneck once
you get a lot of apps on yer disk and yer loading more.

And remember, when you install a program and it says to quit all
other running programs, do it.

And don't go buying bridges, cause if they really were brooklyn
bridges for sale for 20 bucks, we'd all have one in our backyards
already.
