Hi,
I would like to compress a file from e.g. 20 MB to several files of each
approx 5 MB, e.g. to be able to send them by email where size is restricted.
The problem is that the file itself only compresses to approx 18 MB, so I
would like to compress to several files. I believe to remember I did this for
earlier versions, but cannot seem to find this on Vista. Anyone knows how to
do this?

Highly appreciate any good suggestions! Thx

You probably used Winzip, Winrar or some other program which are all
infinitely better than the inbuilt MS unzip facility.

I haven't used it, but Windows Mail has a setting to break apart messages
larger than xx KB.
Don't know if that works with large attachments...

Tools - Accounts - youraccount -

Try a file splitter-joiner application. There are many to pick from.
The name says what it does. You tell it to split a file into as many
smaller pieces you want. Five, ten, a hundred, whatever. Each piece
then can be sent separately. The one downside is if you use it to send
email attachments whoever you sent it do needs to reverse the process
so they will need the same application to do that. If you want to get
more creative you can first use a compression tool like Winzip or
WinRaR to first compress the file (make it smaller in total) then
split the resulting compressed file into smaller pieces.

This will also allow the recipient to join the file.

Get File Splitter

Also, it's a standalone app, so you have the best of both worlds.

There are many programs, freeware and shareware, that enable you to
split a file into several pieces. Besides the programs that just do
this, almost every third-party Zip utility also provides this
capability.

if you read my post.. I say izarc supports DISK SPANNING...

I suggest you google that term

I means it breaks up one BIG file into smaller parts all of them compressed
in a series

for example a 20 mb file becomes 4 with 5 mb (or less) each>>>

file.part1.zip
file.part2.zip
file.part3.zip
file.part4.zip
