How to compress excel file??

I have an excel file which I haev been maintaining data.
It has grown to 10MB and become very slow. I removed all
old data (about 75%) no longer needed but the file still
remains at 10MB. How can I reduce the file size????

Have you read point 4?

And

Don't save the file in two versions but only as Microsoft excel workbook
Not as 97-2002 & 5.0/95 workbook(this make your workbook big)

Yes, did as it directed and saved as excel workbook.
Still 9.7 MB.

Just for the heck of it I saved it as 5.0/95 and it
reduced it from 9.7 MB to 3.7 MB. No special features
were used between versions that should cause a problem.
