How to clear information about bad sectors in a MFT?

Hello
How to clear information about bad sectors in a MFT, for chkdsk to
recreate it properly? All 3-d party utilities show that the HDD is
healthy, but Windows remembers that the HDD has 100 GB of bad sectors.
How to recover the free space? I do not want to lose Windows XP SP2 and
program settings on this system bootable HDD.

I bought a new wd drive and about 3 months after getting it, it had smart
errors. I had to use the seagate tools to find the problem, the drive self
test failed and eventually, wd's utility started saying, too many bad
sectors error.

I sprang for the money and bought spinrite, $80. www.grc.com, and the drive
works like a champ now. The downside is spinrite takes quite a while to go
thru the whole drive, my machine, 12 hours for 80 gigs, fast machines, 4
hours for 60 gigs.

You're going to have to back up the data to another drive/media- can't
do it any other way. The only real way to guarantee it is to go ot the
HDD manufacturers website and look at the utilities for that drive.
There should be one to return it to the factory default state.

Why didn't you replace the disk on warranty.

You're disk is hosed and you're out $80 for the spinwrite.

Got backup ?

Better yet, check the web site to see if your disk is on warranty.

It's dead, jim.

.. . . because I am sick of it, I want the drive to work, not have to return
it all the time. I have done this before and got tired of it. I have
backup and have spinrite and wished I had spinrite earlier, it is very good
at data recovery.

Not true, if the bios recognizes the drive and the drive spins, spinrite
will do data recovery.
