how to change lost Administrator password

Ok, here goes. When I first set up my computer I did not realize that the
Administrator and password had to be established in safe mode. Since this
time, I have had a roommate that new alot about computers and made themself
Administrator of my computer--and they have since moved out and will not or
can not tell me the password they used. How can I gain Administrative
control back on my computer ?? Is my only option to re-format ?? I am
using windows xp home, still with sp1 and my computer is a dell 4550 series.
