I have outlook 2000 SR-1. Somehow the bar on the side to quickly go to the
contact by the first letter got changed to Cyrilic. I want to change it back
to the English alphabet.
How to change language setting in contacts alphabet sidebar in Outlook?

There should be an icon in the lower right portion of that bar (looks like a
contact card). Click it and choose "None"

There is no icon in the right lower portion. There is an icon on the bar
above contacts but right clicking on it produces the standard outlook menu
without possibility to change the language setting. Though the letters on
that information bar (along with the letters of contacts shown start and end)
are in English. The right side bar can't be moved or adjusted. I hope for
more suggestions.

In that case, take a look here in Outlook: Tools menu > Options > Contacts.

There's an option for a second Contact index. Uncheck it if it's checked.

Thank you for the suggestion.
That field only had the filing options for new contacts (first or last
name). Eventually I was able to fix the problem by going to the control
panel settings and changing advanced options in "Regional and Language
options". There is a setting to select a language to use with Non-Unicode
programs that somehow got changed in my settings.
Thank you again for the attention to my problem.
Sincerely, Marina
