How to change home page?

S

Sudy Nim

My server is sending me this notice:
The AT&T Internet Service Home page URL has changed.
Please update your Internet Browser Home Page or Favorites immediately.

Because w98se is not supported by AT&T this change can not be made regardless of
my attempts. Is there a way I can block this notice that prevents my home page
from opening? TIA

The AT&T Internet Service Home page URL has changed.

All you *really* need to do is click on the URL of the new page, then when
IE takes you there, go to the Favorites menu and selct 'add to favorites' and
add the address.

This is a courtesy address for services from ATT... it's good to have it but
a long way from mandatory.
Please update your Internet Browser Home Page or Favorites immediately.

You home page should stay with what ever you have chosen it to be.... Yahoo,
Google, your web site, etc.. There is NO reason for ATT to be your home page.
Because w98se is not supported by AT&T

Of course it is. They may not offer technical support (yet I'm thinking they do)
but there is nothing about IE 6 running on 98SE that seriously differs from IE 6
running on any other OS platform.

IE 6 Runs in Win98SE with as much ease as it does in 2K, NT Server, or XP.

This sounds like a malware problem... and I wouldn't always consider the silly
installation disks that ISPs insinuate you must use as being a lot more than
that. The first thing you could do, IF you used the ATT installation disc... is to
go to add/remove programs and remove the ATT software. All you need for
a dial up is a phone number and a password, and for DSL, a password. (And
settings information for your mail server). You do not need ATT software installed
for your connection to function properly. Removing the software should not affect
your current e-mail or internet settings.

Do you know how to change your default opening (home) page in IE6 ?

I never installed the AT&T software I originally started using Dial-Up

I believe it is some malware or something else I do not understand that opens
when I open the browser. I suppose this will change after a few months and
AT&T stops it?
Do you know how to change your default opening (home) page in IE6 ?

Yes but when I manually change Tools > Internet Options > General > Address and
close the browser it defaults back to: http://www.att.net and the next time I
open the browser I get:

The AT&T Internet Service Home page URL has changed, and it cycles all over
again!

I talked to the 2nd level tech support at AT&T and was told this is because I'm
using w98 and nothing can be done.

One way I get around it is to go to any Favorites and open anything, which opens
the browser. This works as long as I do not go back to the home page.

Hi,
If you set your homepage to "Use Blank" or something else like Yahoo or
Google, does that change stick?

These and other third-party programs can lock the IE homepage. Examine the
settings of security/privacy/antispyware programs for the option to lock
homepage, lock IE control panel, lock IE settings, etc.
Spybot (Advanced Mode) Tools> IE Tweaks
Spybot- Teatimer
Ad-aware Pro
Norton AV 2006 (Web Browsing > Spyware protection)
McAfee AV or Antispyware
Spyware Blaster
Spysweeper
Zone Alarm- free and pro.

If you don't wish to dig through settings of whichever security/privacy
programs you have installed, you may be able to startup in Safe Mode, change
the homepage then restart the computer. That won't always work- an earlier
version of Zone Alarm free had to be uninstalled.

Hope this helps,

No, don't expect this to simply go away with time. Let's see if we can't remedy
the issue now - Ad Aware 7 (Free version) might help you check for mal /
spy-ware. Be careful not to confuse 'Ad Aware' with 'Adware'... the latter
is junk spyware itself. However, I *seriously* believe you're looking at an
issue that occurs from having AT&T software on board.... they can do
this via the web, and if you called for tech support when changing your
access method, they probably did.
Yes but when I manually change Tools > Internet Options > General > Address
and close the browser it defaults back to: http://www.att.net and the next time I
open the browser I get:

Be sure you're hitting "apply" at the bottom of the properties window before closing.
The AT&T Internet Service Home page URL has changed, and it cycles all over
again!

That would indicate to me that you have installed (or perhaps ATT installed, via
the web) some software that's controlling you browser.

When your browser IS open, does the top banner read, "<page name> - Microsoft
Internet Explorer" or does it read, "<page name> - Microsoft Internet Explorer by
AT&T" (or by Yahoo) ??

If there is *any* wording in your IE banner other than *Microsoft*, then your browser
is essentially hi-jacked by that software. Have you checked in the control panel
under add/remove to see if there is any Yahoo or AT&T software installed? If so,
take it out.... you don't really need it for anything to function in IE.

I refuse to believe that this can not be remedied simply because you are
using Windows 98SE. I have *several* 98SE PCs connected to the internet,
with at least one of them using Yahoo! (AT&T) mail, so this is not a common
issue based solely on the operating system.

Are you hitting "apply" when you type a new default home page in the IE options ??

I talked to the 2nd level tech support at AT&T and was told this is because I'm
using w98 and nothing can be done.

Sorry... I don't buy that for an instant. IE6 is IE6... regardless of OS platform.
We need to get their software out of your PC.

Have you installed the Yahoo! toolbar ??

Also, you might try this... right click on the IE6 desktop Icon and select
Properties | Advanced | and find the box labeled "Enable Third Party
Browser Extensions" and uncheck that box. Restart your PC and see
if the problem persists.

Cheers,

DM

PS: Another rather serious problem that has occurred since AT&T and
Yahoo! have merged, is that your ATT e-mail address has been merged
with your Yahoo! e-mail address. Level two support can remedy this if
you still want a separate Yahoo! account from your local AT&T account
for mail. And they remedy this often for clients on Win98, which is why
I fully believe that the line of malarkey about your OS being the 'issue' is a
complete farce.

D

David Morgan \(MAMS\)

Just wanted to add...

If you install Ad Aware 7, do not install the e-mail scanning, and a couple
of the options -such as "ad-watch"- will not be available in the Free version...
and eventually, we will need to reset that "third party browser" funtion back
to yes once we determine if you have the ATT software added.

Hi David Morgan & Don,

In the hopes of reducing confusion I’ll try to answer you both at the same time.
I tried setting homepage to, Use Current, Use Default, Use Blank or inserting
Yahoo or whatever and no change would stick. Clicking “Apply” or “OK” after a
change made no difference. We are making headway as with your combined help we
might have discovered the what, and maybe the how. I am using Spybot and
Ad-Aware se Pro with the latest updates. I ran both and they found nothing of
importance. I also did total clean up of all cookies and temp files and ran
scanreg/fix/opt. I tried startup in Safe Mode changed address to
http://my.att.net but the wrong address returned with the next w98 startup,
however, Ad-Watch caught:

The registry Start Page showed the new address http://my.att.net but when I
re-opened IE I got that same AT&T message, again. Returning to the registry
Start Page it had changed back to the original setting http://www.att.net
apparently you are correct David, AT&T implanted a program, which is altering
the registry. And as you indicated the web page is hi-jacked because the top of
page always shows: “AT&T Microsoft Internet Explorer.”

In Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs, there is program (ATT –AACE)
that I did not knowingly install. Doing a “Find File or Folders” ATT –AACE
contains at least one dll and a couple of exe. A search of the Internet did not
find that program.

I’ve been at this all day and I’m tired, so with a fresh start in the AM (unless
the wife has other plans) I will delete that program, hopefully clean out the
remnants and get back to you with the results. Thank you for sticking with me
through this problem.

Feel free to remove *any* ATT or Yahoo! installed programs... also remove
"True Switch" if they have installed that as well. None of these are needed.

The Yahoo! 'toobar' is it's own little breed of spyware, allowing Yahoo to follow
your search and surf habits via your IP address. If you need Yahoo, you can
simply surf to Yahoo, or hopefully re-set this as your home page if you have a
Yahoo e-mail account and that's more convenient for you.... but the software
simply isn't needed -- and now that ATT and Yahoo have merged, there are a
number of little privacy issues like this.

I venture to say, once it's out of there... you will be able to reset your home
page with ease or someone here will continue to work with you to edit that
registry key.

The main thing (in my humble opinion) is, don't let anyone tell you that they
won't support IE6 just because it's running on Win98SE... it's in a manual
*somewhere,* or someone around here will be glad to help.

By the way, I'm posting on a 2.6 GHz P-IV with a gig of ram (any more is
wasted on 98) running Win-98SE and IE6 and OE6.... and I use no A/V
protection... I simply keep those cookies and temp files emptied after
every surfing session and run Ad Aware every so often.

Why ? Because it's a fine platform that is insanely easy to manually scan
through folders and detect alterations on your own.... there's only one folder
for cookies, only one folder for Temp files, one folder for IE temp cache, only
one programs folder, etc., etc.. As long as you're a single user or don't mind
others at home having access to the PC, Win98SE will remain viable until you
need serious hardware replacement and can no longer find printers and such
that support 98... and even then, the 'used' PC & parts store can be a saviour.

Please let us know what happens after removal.

Cheers,

Since I have had 'issues' with SpyBot, and I don't use ANY of the optional
tools in Ad-Aware... please follow PA Bear's suggestion to disable these
and try again. Too many outside tools can be a detriment, IMHO.

Also, I don't understand why *either* of these should be considered as
"the right" home page for you... but if you enter the address you think
is the correct one, re-insert the _www_ prefix when you do so.....
http://www.my.att.net < long shot >.

Lastly -for the moment- someone will have to offer us a registry fix for the
top banner in IE. In a number of cases I have simply reloaded the OS by
way of a completely clean install, in order to eliminate this for folks... though
the sofware has come out and similar issues have been remedied without
addressing the remaining IE banner corruption.

Get out anything that has to do with Yahoo, AT&T, SWB, or any remnants
of software that may have been provided by an internet service provider,
and try PA Bear's suggestion of disabling those add-on tools and try again.
Given what's in these entries below, they appear to be likely culprits in
attempting to 'maintain' your system 'as is' rather than allowing changes.

It is confusing I know, maybe this will explain correct & incorrect?

In IE 6: Tools > Internet Options > General > Address
Shown is: http://www.att.net/
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Regardless, when I open Internet Explorer I get this "default" web page:

The AT&T Internet Service PROVIDER Home Page has changed.
The new URL is http://my.att.net
Please update your Internet Browser Home Page immediately.
Click the link below to reset your home page to http://my.att.net.
The home page setting will be automatically reset
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
BUT I can not make this change because when I open IE
Automatically http://my.att.net opens the same web page:
http://my.att.net/s/s.dll?spage=cg/news/inter_31708.html

And The - IE: Tools > Internet Options > General > Address
has reverted back to: http://www.att.net/ NOT http://my.att.net

Notice from AT&T states I must change to: http://my.att.net = CORRECT
But IE defaults back to the now inoperative http://www.att.net/ = NOT CORRECT
I can not access the Internet it is locked out by this (WEB PAGE NOTICE) from

Notice from AT&T states I must change to: http://my.att.net = CORRECT

Just a quick note from outside home... This notice is Hogwash - a complete
and total farce... NEITHER of these *needs* to be your "home" page, let alone
MUST be. This is a blatant lie of high magnitude. In a more polite fashion we
should say, screw them and the invasive horse they assaulted your PC with.
But IE defaults back to the now inoperative http://www.att.net/ = NOT CORRECT
I can not access the Internet it is locked out by this (WEB PAGE NOTICE) from
AT&T!

This is no more than the equivalent of nasty _unacceptable_ MAL-ware.
Shame on them for creating this whole scenario for thousands of people.

Are *all* of those AT&T and Yahoo! software programs fully removed?
(Including the removal of "True Switch"). Did you try disabling the 3rd
party browser add-ons?

Were I with you, I would do a registry "find" search, and remove every last
iota of references to AT&T that weren't either legacy or mail settings, and
all references to the software previously removed.

However, it looks as if those two possibly conflicting (any time there's more
than one, IMHO) spyware tools may be another source contributing to this
issue. I'd never let an outside, non registry-specific tool, have *anything* to
say about my 98SE registry.

Again, follow PA Bear's suggestions as well. If this isn't still some AT&T software
that's not yet fully removed, these programs could possibly be preventing access.

I'll check in late tomorrow evening.

Cheers,
