how to backup and restore just one program

I am interested in trying the MS Beta firewall/antivirus program. I have
McAfee which is said to conflict. It came installed with my laptop so I have
no disc for it.

I would like to backup and uninstall the McAfee program but retain the
ability to restore it if I don't like the MS product.

How do I backup just the McAfee program to ensure I've everything that goes
with it and then restore it if needed? I have an external USB drive with
plenty of storage - 250GB.

No need. Just turn the McAfee Antivirus program off, and make sure it does not run in the background. There's only a conflict if both are running together.

Thank you for your reply.

The instructions for the MS Beta say to uninstall. I can understand that
they might want, for competitive reasons, to want other companies' stuff to
be uninstalled but, in fairness, they did say to make sure that you had
backed up the program to be uninstalled if you wanted to reuse it.

So, if someone can answer my original question, I'd appreciate it, i.e., how
do I backup and restore just one program and make sure I have all necessary
elements.

Also, one more question ... how do I turn off McAfee and ensure it does not
kick in at start up without uninstalling it. In the past, when I have tried
to delete stuff from the start menu, it disappears altogether to the recycle
bin. I understand that I can restore from the Recycle bin for a limited
period of time and provided it has not been emptied.

A single program cannot be backed up. You either uninstall the program and reinstall, or you make an image of your entire system partition and restore it.

I do not understand why I cannot "copy" or "backup" a specific file or set
of files including a program.

I just want to be sure that all files associated with it are copied or
backed up.

Steven is correct. It's not simply a matter of copying files and folders. An
installed program leaves traces all over your computer, e.g. the registry,
restore points, pre-fetch etc. If you don't have imaging software - and if
you did you wouldn't be asking - you need to uninstall the program.

However, even that is unneeded here. As Steven / M&D explained, you don't
need to uninstall one antivirus program to use another. All you have to do
is to make sure the first antivirus program isn't running, and that you have
deleted any virus traces the first program has quarantined.

Thanks for the reply. I am generally aware that installed programs leave
traces and share dll files, etc. That's why I asked to be sure, if I backed
it up, that I would indeed have the entire program.

I don't know that I don't have Imaging software. May well be present in the
Dantz Retrospect backup stuff that came with the external hard drive.

BTW, I went into msconfig to disable programs at start but got a msg saying
the computer is not starting in normal mode.

Is there a source with an overview of all this stuff that I can read?

Dantz is not an imaging application.

I didn't say to disable anything from msconfig. To stop your antivirus
program from starting with Windows, find the setting in the program's menus.

The internet is a great resource for almost anything you'll want to know.
