How to avoid Word lockup when Outlook is locked up

Our Outlook locks up from time to time. I noticed that when that happened,
Word also locked up. Is this because Word is my Outlook e-mail editor, and
is there a way to avoid Word lockups during Outlook lockups and still keep
Word as the e-mail editor?

It might be better to explore (with the help of the Outlook forum) why
Outlook locks up in the first place. I find Outlook (2003) very reliable
(but I don't use Word as its editor) and cannot recall it ever having locked
up, despite a huge data file.

Thank you for taking the time to respond to my question. Outlook does seem
to be very reliable. The current server my computer is on, however, is not
as much so. That is why the lockup challenges occur from time to time. If
you don't use Word as your email editor and that works for you, perhaps I may
be better off changing my editor.

Outlook's own editor is quite up to the job of creating e-mails.
