How to avoid changing SMTP servers?

A

Alain

I use RCN and am required to use their SMTP server for
POP mail. So at home, I have smtp.rcn.com in my Outlook
Express settings for each of my POP mail accounts.

But when I'm at school, I can't use RCN's server (off
network) so I use my own mail server (mail.myserver.com)
for SMTP.

The problem is that I 5 POP accounts that I use regularly
and go back and forth to school twice daily. It's
burdensome to change the SMTP server for each of these
accounts twice per day.

Does anyone know a shortcut? Is their some type of
location mgmt. tool that can have different profiles?

Thanks!

Just so you know. This is Outlook forum.

What you can do is creating 2 accounts.

1) Account A will send and receive
Incoming Mail Server: mail.rcn.com
Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.rcn.com

2) Account B will only send
Incoming Mail Server: mail.rcn.com
Outgoing Mail Server: mail.myserver.com

So whenever you are at campus and need to send an e-mail, use account B.
The other option is running your own local SMTP server. I recommend
Mail Express (http://www.idataexpress.com/) if you want to run a local
SMTP server.

Hope that helps.

Thanks Alex. The double accounts seems to work... I
unchecked "include this account when sending/receiving"
so that I don't have duplicates of every email.

When I send or reply from school, all I have to do is
switch to the "non-RCN" account in the "from" field.

I appreciate your help.

ps - I know this is the Outlook forum but I didn't know
where else to post the question... is there an Outlook
Express forum?

I'm glad that I can help.

You can also do this in Outlook. There is an Accounts icon on the
toolbar when you composing a message. Click on it and choose the
account that you want to send as.

Sure, try following newsgroups:

microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie5.outlookexpress
microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie55.outlookexpress
microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6_outlookexpress
