How to associate an email attachement with program to open it?

When clicking to open an attachement to an email, I recieve the message -
This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this
action. Create an associaiton in the Folder Options control panel. However,
going to that control panel doesn't offer clear or useful direction about
creating an association that will open this file. For example, it would be
useful to have pdf files open in my Adobe reader or jpg files in my photo
program.

If you installed the Adobe Reader program then .pdf filetypes are already
associated with that program.

If you want to use something other than the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer
as the default program to view .jpg files then change the JPEG filetype
association. Filetype associations are defined under the "File Types" tab
panel in the Folder Options applet you had open before. Scroll down to the
JPE, JPEG, and JPG filetypes and click on the Change button and select
whatever program you want to use as the default application to view that
filetype.
