How to activate (again) the prompt prior of opening an attachment?

Hello,
At one stage I did disable this prompt for
a specific file extension, so that nowadays
those attachments will open up at once.
But now I'd like to reactivate such prompt...
So thanks very much in advance for any tips.
Regards, Philippe.

PS: Perhaps I'd now also state "the content"
of this "prompt" I'm talking about:
"Do you want to open this file?" (Open / Cancel).

The following procedure involves editing the Registry.

If you are uncertain, then get someone to do it for you.

You edit the Registry at your own risk !!

To reset or change back the open or save behaviour when downloading or
opening a file.

Start>Run>type regedit>OK.

Navigate to the following key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\AttachmentExecute\{long
number}

Inside this registry key, on the right, there will be a list of data
corresponding
to all the file types that you have un-ticked the "Always ask before opening
this type of file" option check box.

Delete the registry values for the file type or extension that you want to
reset or return the file type to its default behaviour. (.doc .pdf .png etc)

Close Registry Editor.

HTH?

Wow, thanks a lot for this "most perfect" reply, Steve!

So indeed, after deleting this registry value for the file
extension ".doc" (in my case), the prompt appeared
again when attempting to open such attachment (!).

Hmm, but since I do NOT find such registry entry for
the extensions ".txt" and ".jpg", and NO prompt shows
up when attempting to open those attachments, I'm
wondering now if these two extensions were perhaps
....never meant to be linked with such prompt at Vista?
But otherwise, how come they do NOT show up under
this specific registry key on my OS?

So your renewed reply would be appreciated; thanks.

Bye, Philippe.

Bye, Philippe.

There are certain file types that are regarded as "safe" in vista, the two
that you mention are in that list.
I do not have the KB article to hand, but you can search for it if you wish.
If I where you I would not bother now that your original problem is solved
:-))

Pleased to hear it, and thanks for the feedback.

Thanks for this renewed feedback, Steve!
So, "good to know" that it's just normal not to
have this prompt for certain file extensions.
Yes, I'm "happy now" and will therefore NOT
insist to search for this specific KB; he, he!
Bye, Philippe.
