you may just need to create local username as the same as the win98's username. this page talks about domain and workgroup sharing, but it may help,

Don't send e-mail or reply to me except you need consulting services. Posting on MS newsgroup will benefit all readers and you may get more help.

On the WXP computer, how do I change the Username to log on the remote W98 computer?But on the W98[SE] PC (let's call it "PC-W98"), how do I know the users it has, and the one who is active?

And when I know this, on the WXPHome computer, when in Windows Explorer I double-click "PC-W98", what I get is:
a.. 1 time in 10, I can see the files on W98;
b.. 9 times in 10, I get the windowlet:
Connect to PC-W98
Username: PC-W98\Guest
Password:
| OK | | Cancel |

and at that time, I can only click "OK" (then the windowlet comes again), or "Cancel" (giving up seing the files in PC-W98); I see no way to change "Guest" with another User name.
Anyone knows how to change that user name? TIA,

{Posting a PLAIN TEXT version, after the HTML got no reply}

Robert, I have 2 questions.

1) On the W98[SE] PC (let's call it "PC-W98"), how do I know
the users it has, and the one who is active?

2) On the WXPHome computer, even after creating an User with
same name as on PC-W98, when in Windows Explorer I double-click
"PC-W98", what I get is:
- 1 time in 10, I can see the files on W98;
- 9 times in 10, I get the windowlet:
______________________________
| Connect to PC-W98
|______________________________
| Username: PC-W98\Guest [greyed out, non-editable]
| Password: [blank]
| | OK | | Cancel |
|______________________________

and at that time, I can only click "OK" (then the
windowlet comes again), or "Cancel" (giving up
seing the files in PC-W98); I see no way to
change "Guest" with another User name.

Anyone knows how to change that "loging" user name? TIA,
