How set custom color.

I’m using XL97 under WinXP-pro with SR2+ updates. My Office97
installation has been updated with all (known) appropriate updates.

I’d like to set the fill of a cell to a lighter gray than the 25% gray
on the standard color pallet pull down menu. HELP says, “If you don't
see the color you want, click More Fill Colors. Click a color on the
Standard tab, or click the Custom tab and mix your own color, and then
click OK.”

I don’t find any “More Fill Colors” option either on the pull down menu
or with Format/Cells/Patterns on the main menu bar. Other sites say to
click on the “down arrow” to see more color options. None shows on my
version of XL. In my WORD97 and POWERPOINT97 applications, I can select
the entire range of colors.

Have I overlooked some options tab?

I now have XL2000, but I think it was the same in 97 - go to Tools |
Options | Colour (tab) and here you can pick one of the defined colours
and modify it with another one.

Hope this helps.

Got it. Thanks… I don’t know how I missed it. I’m sure I checked that
dialog box many times, and some how I did not see the “modify” button.

Well, there are a lot of tabs on the Options dialogue - it's easy to
miss. Glad you found it in the end.
