how many rules can be set up in outlook 2003

Can someone tell me please, how many rules are we limited to in Oulook 2003?
Is there a way to increase the number of rules that govern our Outlook
incomming mail to more than just the default number?

Thanks and have a great day.

Outlook's rules limit is not by number of rules, but by total number of
characters found in all rules combined. For an Exchange server account, the
limit is 32K and that can't be changed.

What do you mean by, "total number of
characters found in all rules combined. For an Exchange server account, the
limit is 32K?" My company just updated our outlook and now many of the
rules I previously had working no longer are working.

What was unclear?

The big question is: Why the heck would they put such constraint on rules?
32KB? Is that character count? Is there a way to edit the .rwz file and
pare down the rules? I limit the name to last name, first initial. I may
change that to simply numbering the rules and paring down the folder names so
I can limit the number of characters in the rules file. To me, that's just
dumb.

outlook 2003 uses Unicode for rules, so you'll have half as many as before
(approximately). Plus, older versions could force rules to the client side
and they did not count towards the 32 kb. That is no longer true - all rules
count in the new versions.

It's pretty much impossible to know how big they are - it's basically just
wait and see if exchange rejects them. Make them as compact as possible and
if you can make 1 rule do the work of two, do it.

I can't even describe how amazing ridiculous this is. Give people the means
to organize their e-mails and then limit that ability in a world of ever
expanding inboxes. I, like many folks probably, push my e-mails to a local
pst file where I break the e-mails down by company and then individual.

Would it be better if I appended the company name to the name of the rule
with the senders Last name and first initial? Like L-3 Smith R? That way,
at least the company integrity would be maintained as well as the alpha last
name.

It just seems pretty dumb that they would not expand this capability. I
guess in the grand scheme, if you have to save space somewhere, this would be
the low hanging fruit, but it's pretty darned inconvenient for me.

the problem is that your exchange server is working off of old technology,
with its start in an era when "640K ought to be enough for anybody". Times
change, software takes longer. You'll have the ability to make more rules
when your site upgrades to Exchange 2007.

Hi Brian,
what is a "character"? Please. Milad Najjar. Thank you.

Letters, digits, and punctuation are all characters. In addition, rules
also contain some metadata that also contributes to the space usage. Rules
space for Exchange 2007 has been increased to 64 KB per mailbox by default,
but can be expanded to 256 KB.
