How many processess should be running?

I just looked at the running processes (CtrAltDel) and found that 43
processes were listed. All that when I did not have a single program
of my own opened.

Is this an excessive number?

I would list them but I'm not sure how to copy the list.

XP (CME) on a Dell Dimension C521 on cable.

It's not so much the number as what they are. That said 43 is not unusual.
