How many processes?

Win I call up the task manager I am seeing 34 processes active - that sounds
like 33 more than I need! Is a way to sort through these, to determine
which are the REAL processes? Is there a list of those that I should be
seeing, and by extension which I should routinely close or block from
clogging the arteries of my system?

Sounds pretty normal.

34 is not unusual. Any program can run at start up. The key is finding
out which of the ones on your system you want to run. Doing a Google
search on each executable generally gives all the info you need to make
an informed decision.

Those are mainly system services, plus background items like your
antivirus, and explorer (the desktop. Its a typical enough number.
Just check for any that is using a lot of CPU without explanation (other
than System Idle, which is what it sounds like), or which is using a
steadily increasing amount of memory without dropping back.
