Hi, I am a greenhand in network.
We have 9 pcs in two hostel rooms. 2 PCs have XP prefessional version. We
wanna purchase 7 more xp HOME edition. Then link 9 pc in one LAN using
peer-to peer. The shop sales tell me must buy prefessional version if PC more
than 5 in LAN, otherwise it is not supported by HOME edtion. The professional
version is double expensive than home edition. Is it true that only less than
5 PCs in LAN being supported by HOME edition? Thank you very much.

By the way, is it legal using home edition is company PC?

Yang,

You are entitled to use any version of Windows that fulfills your needs, Home or
Pro, in any environment.

The limitation is on the number of simultaneous incoming connections (generally
for sharing files): 5 for XP Home, 10 for XP Pro.

It is quite legal to use Home instead of Pro in a company. It is just
that Pro has more features that would be used in a business situation
than Home does - joining a domain, for instance. Here is a link
explaining the differences between Home and Pro:

The incoming connection limit only matters if the computers need to
share resources. However, you haven't mentioned if there is an Internet
connection, if there is a domain, or a machine acting as server
(printers, file serving, application serving, etc.). Here is a link
explaining the connection limitation:

Thanks Chuck and Malke, I would NOT share file or printer in this 9 pcs
peer-to-peer network. But 9 pc will use a same internet access account. Is it
supported?

By the way, I had 2 prefessional XP in that 9 pcs. Can I use prefessional
system when some incoming requirement constraint happened for HOME edition?
Thanks

You can use an XP Pro system for 10 simultaneous connections. The limit of 5
for XP Home or 10 for XP Pro applies to file sharing, not to internet access.
From 314882:
Per development: The connection limit refers to the number of redirector-based
connections and is enforced for any file, print, named pipe, or mail slot
session. The TCP connection limit is not enforced, but it may be bound by legal
agreement to not permit more than 10 clients.
