How many is too many items in inbox?

I've got a user who likes to keep all of his email in his inbox. Currently
he's got about 1700 items. He periodically complains of problems with
Outlook. His most recent problem is that when he's remote but connected,
Outlook isn't synching automatically, and he has to prompt a send/receive.

My questions are: Is there an official limit to how many items can be kept
in the inbox for optimal funcationality? What problems can I expect when an
inbox is that full? (his mailbox is pretty large also...)

If I want him to change his way of dealing with email, I need some hard
facts to convince him. If his full inbox/mailbox isn't the problem, any other
suggestions?

Thanks.

Need a little more info... I take it he is on a exchange
How big did the admin make his mail box
How much space is used up
1700 items does not take up much space if its a simple message
1700 with 1-2 meg attachments well that's another story

Limits are usually by size, not number of items.

If the inbox resides on a PST file, then I would run scanpst against it
to check for and repair any errors. Also if the PST file is Outlook
97-2002 type, then the max size is 2GB.
