255. And it's not a problem if you design databases using relational
principles; I've needed as many as 60 fields, twice in the past twenty
years, and I've built a tidy few databases.

If you want a spreadsheet rather than a relational database, consider
using Excel.

Of course, Excel only allows 256 columns...
