How float a table?

S

Scott Meyers

I have a table that I want to appear at the point where it's defined, if it will
fit on the current page, and at the top of the next page, if it won't fit on the
current page. Word seems to do that by default, which is fine, but if the table
must be moved to the next page, I want the following text to appear on the
preceding page. This way, there are no large expanses of blank space on a page
preceding a table. I also want this to be automatic, so if I move the text
referring to the table (and which immediately precedes the table), the table
will automatically be moved, too.

I've googled around for how to do this, but all solutions seem to require manual
placement of the table (e.g., by putting it in a text box or frame, then
manually placing the text box or frame). Is there no way to have Word float
tables automatically?

I'm using Word 2002.

Thanks,

Scott

Hi Scott,

Your Googling found the right answer -- there is no automatic way to
have text flow back to the previous page when a table, or a text box
or any floating graphic, moves forward.
