how DOS program runs under XP?

I still have a couple of old DOS programs for house keeping, which I
was using on a Win98 machine before. I recently tried the same program
on XP, and I could not believe how much slower it is, when the XP
machine is suppose to be much faster than the Win98 machine. One
program usually runs for 5 minutes on Win98 machine, it ran almost 40
minutes on XP. Another that runs for 20-30 minutes on Win98, now it's
6 hours into it and it's still computing. What's wrong with this?

XP does not run on or include dos anymore, so the programs may never run
correctly.
1 - try running them in compatability mode for dos
2 - upgrade the old dos programs to 32 bit xp versions
3 - setup a dual boot with xp and dos or win98

There is no DOS in Windows XP, only a DOS emulator. Try running your
older programs in Compatibility Mode under XP. Look in your Help &
Support files for instructions about Compatibility Mode. If the
programs still do not run well in Compatibility Mode, you can 1)
contact the program mftr. and see if there is an updated version that
will run under XP (a completely different operating system from DOS and
Win9x); 2)or find a new XP-compatible program that will do what you
want; 3)or keep an older machine around running the older operating
system for your program.

Hi!
There is no DOS in XP.So there will be problems in running those old
programs.
Try to run programs in compatibility mode.
