How does Outlook 2003 Use Hotmail?

Hi i am after an explaination of how (if you have configured Outlook 2003
with your hotmail account) messages are sent and received? For example does
Outlook 2003 use the Exchange 2003 HTTP virtual server? Or does Outlook 2003
contact the Hotmail server directly through the clients internet connection?

For example

Outlook2003 Client ---> Direct to internet to hotmail servers
Outlook2003 Client ---> Exchange 2003 server ----> Direct to internet to
hotmail servers

I think it's direct to the Hotmail server(s) using WebDAV.
