How does one turn off all the bells and whistles in Word?

Somehow I got something started on Word and each time I want to place my
cursor on a word or letter it highlights an entire sentence or more. I'd just
like to be like Word 2000.

Could well be an issue with your mouse settings (hard or software).

What version are you having now?
