How does one change in a Word document an existing comment's ID?

I have a document that has been used by several different people over a
course of several years, and each of the comments must be certified by the
current owner. We have been trying to determine how to edit the saved
comments so that the current owner can replace his name with the previous
owners. Any idea if this can be done ?

version of Word?

In native Word 2007 format, I'd open up the DOCX as a ZIP file and edit
the names in the document.xml file.

The same might be possible in earlier versions (XML in Word 2003
professional, RTF) or by talking directly to the document through VBA.

I misread your OP: you can find author names of tracked changes in the
document.xml.

To change the authors of comments, open up comments.xml.
